Raining All August? 3 Min From SM, Session & Burnham (2026)

These are the measured walks from our gate, at a normal pace, the numbers I give every guest before they book: SM City Baguio, three minutes. Session Road, three minutes. Burnham Park, ten minutes.

On a clear day, three numbers like that are a convenience. In a rainy August they are the difference between a trip that happens and a trip that hides in the room. You do not queue for a jeep in the rain to go to the mall when the mall is a three-minute walk. You do not stand on a corner in heavy traffic hoping a taxi passes.

The map below is the honest picture: one dot in the middle of the three places guests actually want to be.

I have lived this month from the front desk. Almost all of August rained. The streets stayed wet, the traffic ran heavy, and every day the same pattern repeated: guests who booked far from the centre spent their mornings trying to get out, and guests who booked with us just walked.

Baguio does not flood. The rain's real cost here is the cold and the traffic. Days blur into each other when you cannot get anywhere, and the people who coped best were the ones with everything on foot.

What I saw all month: people filled the malls. SM above all. In the rain, the mall is the plan. And the walk to it being three minutes instead of a jeep ride is precisely what made August work for our guests.

I will be straight about the cheaper side of this argument, because it has a season. A cheap place a few rides away is fine when it is not raining. Say April: jeeps are easy, taxis are easy, and the rides are part of the trip.

Rainy season flips the whole calculation. Traffic gets heavy, taxis get hard to flag, jeeps fill up and move slowly. What was a fifteen-minute ride in April becomes a forty-five-minute wait in August. I have seen guests make that trade and lose the morning they came for.

The plan I give guests is short and it works. Step out of our gate, walk three minutes to SM City Baguio. Mall hours cover the rain: food, coffee, groceries, the cinema, the supermarket. That is a full day in the rain and you never touch a vehicle.

Session Road is the same three minutes the other way, for the cafés and the restaurant stretch. Save Burnham Park for the window when the rain actually stops — ten minutes on foot, and it is best seen with the clouds starting to lift.

What to bring for a rainy Baguio stay: an umbrella, a warm layer, and shoes with grip. The cold is the thing that surprises people, not the water. Rooms at our place come with hot shower and fresh bedding, and nobody needs aircon here — Baguio's climate does the cooling on its own.

The location is the reason, and the flow proves it. Guests who booked far from the centre kept cancelling as the rain went on, and the walk-ins kept coming to us. A cancellation somewhere else becomes a walk-in here, because the one thing the rain could not take away was the three-minute walk.

It was a tiring month to run — I will not pretend otherwise — but the business stayed strong for the same reason the guests stayed happy. When the transport around a city stops working, the accommodation that is on foot wins.

One honest carve-out: if you are driving up to Baguio, this is probably not the right booking for you. Central locations and easy parking do not mix, and I would rather say that before you book than after you arrive.
